Since Marquette University has become the collegiate destination of choice for some of the Houston area's best basketball players, we went back to H-Town's resident expert on hoops, Jim Hicks of RCS Sports, to learn more about Junior Cadougan and for an update on fellow MU commit Erik Williams. On his site, Hicks notes that Buzz Williams has "one helluva recruiting class for Marquette who could become the first "out of state college" to land a pair of Top 5 players from Houston High Schools in the same year."

Jim, can you break down Cadougan's game for Marquette fans? He could be the most experienced incoming point guard the school's ever inked, when comparing resumes. Junior is a floor general who is patient and poised and he doesn't get rattled easily. Plus, he's smart enough to know what he can't do on the court.

**Pardon the interruption -- the Big East Basketball Report agrees with Jim's glowing assessment of Cadougan, based on point guard's fine play at Reebok U this week. According to Jeff Borzello, "A really solid all-around player, Cardougan played as if he was still being recruited. Immediately, you notice that he is a leader on the court." Based on reviews of his game, Cadougan relies on strength to succeed at the high school level. First, is that true. Second, does Cadougan have the requisite speed and quickness to succeed in the Big East?
Let's not forget Christian Life Academy has been by far the most talented prep program in all of Texas each of the past two seasons. It's not like he's toting a program on his back, yet Junior is still a lock to be on RCS Sports' Pre Season All Greater Houston Team.

It takes talent and he has certainly been surrounded by plenty of it. The kid simply relies on one of the fundamentals of basketball - like keeping your body between the ball and defender. Some didn't think DJ Augustine had the speed and quickness to attain the all-Big 12 accolades he earned. Ditto for Nic Wise at Arizona (although he doesn't have the same resume as DJ). Junior will be fine in the Big East.

What are Cadougan's greatest assets as a point guard?
Experience. Not to mention economically, you get the support of an entire country (Canada) along with this kid.

Has Marquette's visibility in the Greater Houston area become more pronounced in the months since Buzz was hired?
No doubt about it! Buzz could have been anywhere in the country to kick off the July live evaluation period, but he was in Houston complete with dip cup in hand watching future prized possession Erik Williams at the Southwest Invitational Camp (directed by John Lucas).

Erik Williams is finally back on the court more than six months after breaking his ankle. How is Williams playing so far this summer?
Based on the bell curve, Erik is about 75% back to his previous rare form. Williams had 19 points in his return to action earlier this week at the 2008 Southwest Invitational Camp.

Note to MU ticket office: BAD IDEA

Marquette announced their "5-pack" ticket plans today.

BLUE PLAN: Georgetown, Connecticut, Syracuse, Villanova and St. John's
GOLD PLAN: Wisconsin, West Virginia, DePaul, Cincinnati and Seton Hall

Notice anything unusual about this scheme? In past years, they've packaged in 1-2 cupcake games with 3-4 solid games in each 5 pack. Not this year. All 10 games are quality Big East games.

As you can see, the hottest ticket of the year, the MU v. UW game, is also in a 5-pack. MU did this 2 years ago, forcing the hated Badger fans into buying 4 unwanted games, so they could get the UW game and befoul our Bradley Center.

What happened two years ago? Half the upper deck of our Bradley Center was decked out in red. Nothing pisses me off more than having UW (or UL) fans smelling up our home court. -- Oh, and we lost.

What happened later? Those same Badger fans SOLD THEIR TICKETS ON EBAY. And guess what? With auctioning off a couple good BE games, they were able to come out ahead!

This year, the UW package includes 4 high quality games. Guess what? They'll dump those tickets, and actually MAKE money buying this package.

On the other hand .. Two years ago, the demand from MU season ticket holders purchasing extras for friends was enough to sell out the place TWICE. I realize some Season Ticket Holders will commit the sin of buying for their red-devil friends, but the majority will not.

It's not too late, Ticket Office. Change the ticket packages right now, and keep the red out.

I swear to god, let me buy 100 tickets. I will find 100 Warrior fans to sit in those seats, and come back for more.

Junior Cadougan commits to Marquette

As reported first by Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Buzz Williams completed his 2009 freshman class today when highly regarded point guard Junior Cadougan from Humble, TX verbally committed to Marquette University. Cadougan, a 6'1" 195 pound point guard from Humble Christian Academy, committed to MU over Memphis and Wake Forest.

Cadougan, a Canadian native who moved to Houston after his freshman year of high school, was recently named the top playmaker at the NBPA Top 100 Camp and will participate in Reebok U this week in Philadelphia.

Cadougan rounds out a promising 2009 class which includes three RSCI top 100 players, the first at Marquette since the Three Amigos. Cadougan (#70) will be joined by Erik Williams (#78) and Jeronne Maymon (#85) and soon-to-be redshirted Liam McMorrow as freshmen in 2009.

Commentary: 2009 BE Schedule is favorable to MU

Now that the Big East schedule is out, there has been a flurry of commentary about how brutal MU's schedule will be. There is a certain amount of truth to that--EVERY team in the Big East plays a brutal schedule. The more relevant question is whether the schedule provides any advantage or disadvantage in getting to the 12 to13 wins that will likely be necessary to secure a top four finish and two-round bye in the newly revamped Big East Tournament.

In this light, I believe MU has a very favorable schedule.

The conventional wisdom is that you want your tough games at home--thus, when three of four toughest games--Pitt, UL and ND--are scheduled on the road, it leads to concern about the schedule being too difficult. However, if Pitt, ND and UL are truly top 10 teams, then they would be a tough win even if we played the games at home.

The ideal schedule would put both the easiest and most difficult games on the road, and the most competitive games at home. The logic is that you're more likely to lose some of the tough games anyway and win the easy ones anyway regardless of venue. Home court advantage is wasted on the easiest and most difficult games. Where the home court advantage comes into plays is with the toss-ups.

• Top Quartile: @UL, @Pitt, @ND, UConn
• 2nd Quartile (MU in this group): Syracuse, WVU, Georgetown @Georgetown
• 3rd Quartile: VU, @VU, UC, SHU, @Rutgers
• Bottom Quartile: Depaul, @Depaul, @USF, @PC, St. Johns.

Now, no road game is a gimme--but I like our chances of winning at Providence and Rutgers a whole lot more than games at Syracuse and WVU.

I think this is a decent schedule--8 of 9 home games are winnable given our home court advantage--most of our home games are against teams that are equal or below our level. On the road, if we can take care of business against PC, Depaul, Rutgers and USF, take one of the other two mirror games, and steal one from ND/Pitt/UL, we'll be at 13 wins, which should put us in the hunt for a double-bye in the BET.

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette men's basketball team will face Georgetown, Villanova and DePaul in home-and-home series in 2008-09 BIG EAST Conference play the league office announced Wednesday morning, highlighting the squad's 18-game conference schedule.

The Golden Eagles have learned where they will take on their fellow league programs next season, but the layout of the actual schedule has yet to be determined.

HOME GAMES: Cincinnati, Connecticut, DePaul, Georgetown, St. John's, Seton Hall, Syracuse, Villanova, West Virginia.

ROAD GAMES: DePaul, Georgetown, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Providence, Rutgers, USF, Villanova.

The upcoming season will mark the second campaign for the 18-game BIG EAST schedule, which features three home-and-home opponents for every school and one matchup against each of the remaining 12 league opponents.

In 2007-08, Marquette's crossover trio of Louisville, Notre Dame and Seton Hall combined to post an overall conference record of 35-19. No other school in the BIG EAST had its three repeat programs reach that win total and MU finished 3-3 in those outings.

2008-09 season tickets start at $180 and will go on sale July 14. Five game mini plans will also be available later in the summer and start at just $45. The five-game mini-plans will include the nine BIG EAST home games and non-conference opponent Wisconsin.

Recruiting updates

With Liam McMorrow officially on campus, Buzz Williams and his staff are turning their attention to filling the final slot for the 2009 class and planning ahead for the class of 2010. Here's a series of updates on kids that MU has demonstrated a high level of interest in:

From the class of 2009, Junior Cadougan visited MU last weekend. Cadougan is a 6'1" point guard from Canada by way of Humble, Texas. Reports indicate Cadougan is down to three schools -- MU, Memphis and Wake Forest, and was named the top playmaker at the NBPA camp last month. Cadougan will participate in the prestigious Reebok All-American Camp next week in Philadelphia.

Even with the Dwight Buycks commitment there will be a gaping hole at the point guard position for MU heading into the 2009-2010 season (unless you're impressed with the role players MU currently has in the stable). Filling out the 2009 class with a point guard is the logical choice.

Of course, recruiting can be illogical, and MU is not done recruiting 2009 kids at other positions despite the apparent scholarship logjam and the acute need at the point. Consider:

• Donte Hill, a 6'4" shooting guard from Virginia Beach, is sporting offers from Marquette, ODU and George Mason. Clemson could be next.
• Also from the class of 2009, MU has been in "constant contact" with Tony Freeland, a 6'5" small forward from Los Angeles.
• Omari Lawrence, a 6'4" 205 pound guard from New York City, recently visited MU with 6'6" teammate Kevin Parrom. The New York Daily News caught up with Lawrence earlier this week to discuss his decision to transfer from St. Raymond's to South Kent Prep. Lawrence will also visit Florida, Louisville and UConn this summer. Both Lawrence and Parrom are 2009 prospects.

The moral of the story ...... don't count on verbal commitments and realize that attrition happens.

Oh ...... looking ahead to 2010, The NBE Basketball Report filed a detailed update on Tobias Harris, a 6'8" 215-pound forward from the 2010 class. Harris recently participated in MU's Elite Camp and has or will visit Texas, UCLA, USC, Rutgers, Kansas, West Virginia, Virginia, Louisville and St. John’s.

The Charm Offensive

After embracing a quiet, guarded public persona during his first few months on the job (which was incredibly refreshing given the media whoring we'd seen in previous years) Buzz Williams is emerging, ever so smartly and measured, in the media. After nearly wrapping up the bulk of what looks to be a solid-to-very-good 2009 recruiting class, and in advance of the vital open recruiting season, Marquette fans (and others) are getting to know their head coach.

First we had the Buzz BBQ, a spectacular success by all accounts. +1

Next we had an article from a media outlet that we're not comfortable mentioning given their bassackwards and unclear demands of new media. Still, Colin Fly is a fine reporter and a few days ago he re-introduced Buzz Williams to the masses on the backs of the program's greatest current strength, the Three Amigos. +1

Now, we have the Holy Grail of sorts--- a big, fat feature on the Marquette program and Buzz Williams on ESPN.com. The Adam Rittenberg article is a home run. Williams is positioned as a decent, down-home fellow who worked his tail off to make his own breaks. More importantly, coach Williams comes across as a player's coach (if there can be such a thing at the college level) and the accolades from Billy Gillispie and Jerel McNeal reaffirm the potential upside of the hire. +1

While the media firehose we'd been drinking from in the past nine years has slowed considerably, one gets the sense that the coverage now is much more about the Marquette program than the coach himself. Blatant self-interest (self promotion?) has its limitations -- and a well executed media strategy on behalf of the basketball program, rather than the coach, is bound to pay dividends.

New Recruit for Marquette

In a somewhat strange development, it appears that Marquette has received a commitment from another player. The new player is Liam McMorrow, who is a 7', 260lb transfer from Durham College in Canada. But not only has McMorrow committed to Marquette, but he's already on Marquette's campus and checked into Humphrey. In fact, as confirmed by Mark Miller, McMorrow has started practicing with the guys at the AL (link has more info).

So what do we know about Liam McMorrow? He's big and he's a bit of a project. According to Mark Miller, McMorrow will have to sit out a year due to the transfer. He'll end up in the same class as Otule and will have three years of eligibility. In the MUScoop discussion thread, poster MU Chi_IL found a number of links on the internet about McMorrow.

Liam McMorrow, a six-foot-eleven newcomer, will help that defensive goal. Displaying good hands for the basketball and a soft shooting touch around the basket, he shouldn’t be limited to just a defensive role either. from the Durham College Chronicle

In one game, he pulled down 18 rebounds. In another game, he sank the two winning free throws, despite a season average of 55%. Finally, poster Pakuni found a youtube clip of McMorrow that really doesn't show a whole lot.

Color us floored (is that a color?). Not only did this guy fly under the radar, but he made it all the way to campus without so much as a peep. Have to hand it to Buzz for his stealth recruiting.

Personally, I'm a big fan of this signing despite the fact that he's still raw. Frankly, any legitimate big man these days is probably a one and done and they're signing with a school like Duke/UNC/Kansas. It's worthwhile to take 1-2 guys per year that have potential because of the hope that they'll pan out. Some of the best big men in the Big East, such as Aaron Gray and Roy Hibbert, were considered projects that developed. Plus, given that McMorrow will have a transfer year to work with Dale Layer and Tony Benford, there's a better chance of realizing his potential. Both assistant coaches have worked and developed quality big men in the past, unlike the previous coaching staff.

Here is how the classes now look according to the MUScoop Scholarship Table. There is only one spot available, and all belief is that it will go to fill the need of PG. Hopefully, another Canadian named Junior Cadougan, who was on campus visiting this week, will be that final scholarship slot.

BuzzBQ Review

My wife, 2 year old son, and 10 day old son made the trek down to Marquette for the 1st Annual BuzzBQ.

Great show by Marquette, as usual. Perfect night for it. Well attended. Bumped in to the usual internet suspects. The Rice family shared their table with us, and texted their son that one of the Cracked Sidewalks team was eating with them, thinking he'd be really impressed. The return text message suggested I should get a life. Harrumph. Where's the love?

Buzz and the team were out in force, signing autographs, mingling with the crowd. The local ESPN Radio team was there, interviewing players.

I made sure to bump in to Mo Acker, to wish him a happy birthday.

Great event, one they should consider doing every year.

Double dipping in NYC

Buzz Williams and his staff are involved with literally dozens of prospects for the 2009 class where he has two more scholarships to offer. The Big East Basketball Report updates us on two of those prospects, guard Omari Lawrence (think Tyshawn Taylor with a more refined offensive game) and small forward Kevin Parrom -- two of NYC's top prospects.

The pair, who play for the New York Panthers this summer, are expected to visit Marquette together on June 26.

Buzz goes JUCO again

Dwight Buycks, one of the top junior college players in the nation, verbally committed to Marquette University earlier today. A 6'3" combo guard out of Indian Hills Community College in Iowa, Buycks selected MU over a host of schools including Iowa State, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Missouri.

Buycks will join the Marquette program as a junior in the fall of 2009. The Milwaukee native played his high school ball at Bay View and originally committed to Bradley before academic issues led him to Indian Hills. With well-publicized concerns about the questionable academic profile of recent MU commit Jeronne Maymon, is Buzz Williams taking on yet another academic risk just two months into his tenure as head coach? 'Not so' reports Mark Miller at Wishoops, who reveals that Buycks is taking care of business in the classroom at Indian Hills, landing a 3.6 GPA in his first year there.

Last season, Buycks led Indian Hills in scoring at roughly 16 points per game while chipping in four boards and three assists. Buycks looks to be more of a scorer than a shooter -- he hit 46% of his shots from the field and a dreadful 26% from downtown.

With MU poised to graduate the Three Amigos after next season --- three 1,000 point scorers including the top two scorers in Marquette basketball history (perhaps) -- Buzz Williams is faced with making the most of a roster full of role players and high-ceiling freshmen heading into the 2009-2010 campaign. With that in mind and a gaping hole looming in the backcourt, Coach Williams had at least three options:

a) go to battle with David Cubillan and Maurice Acker as his featured point guards -- a recipe for a second-division Big East finish;
b) entrust a true freshman point guard with the reigns of a Big East program; or,
c) overload the junior class by going JUCO and hope for the best.

Buycks joins high school forwards Jeronne Maymon and Erik Williams in the class that will enter the Marquette program in 2009. If the current slate of committed scholarships holds up, the 2009-2010 roster should look something like this:

Sophomores: Otule
Freshmen: Erik Williams, Jeronne Maymon

It will be an interesting season for Marquette, their overwhelming experience will help balance the inexperience of their head coach. Having three guards with so much time under their belt will be a big asset for Buzz Williams and should help Marquette remain in contention among the top half of the Big East. Now, if they could just find some consistent and solid interior play to help match-up with more teams, this group might be able to get farther along than they have since joining the Big East.

Buzz Williams casts a wide net on the recruiting trail

Marquette needs a point guard for the 2009 class -- this we know. Point guard and center are the remaining priorities for that class, which already boasts a pair of Top 100 forwards in Erik Williams and Jeronne Maymon.

So, who will it be at the point?

For now there's quite a list of players from all over the country who have been mentioned with MU. In the past we've talked about Johnny Lacy as one potential option. Need a few more names? Try A.J. 2008 Update
Even before we get to the 2009 class, Buzz Williams might not be done with 2008.

With Varez Ward recently committing to the University of Texas, MU is focused on 6'5" guard Donald Williams per Rivals.com. Williams, a shooting guard from Temple Hills (Md.) Progressive Christian Academy, is down to St. John's and Marquette after ruling out UNO and UAB. Williams was recently named the Select MVP at the Bob Gibbons Tournament of Champions event.

Williams' coach is playing the Bully Hurley card, saying he prefers the Johnnies for his player on the basis of playing time. Hey, some coaches have an affinity for programs in the basement (and given the mass exodus from the MU backcourt after next season that can hardly be a long-term concern).

MU has one remaining scholarship available for next year's roster, and expects Williams to visit Milwaukee next weekend. Williams will visit SJU this weekend.

2008-2009 Schedule Notes

In one of his many quality updates during the month of May, Todd Rosiak offered up a few notes on MU's schedule for the coming season in a recent post -- here are the early highlights from the out-of-conference schedule:

BTW, per Rosiak, both games in the Chicago Invitational assume MU wins a pair of home games to reach the 'final four' of this event.....no details yet on that aspect of the schedule.

Dec. 6 -- MU hosts Bucky

Dec. 16 -- MU vs. Tennessee in Nashville as part of the SEC-Big East Invitational. MU gets a chance to abuse The Necklace in the Vols' home state.

Of course, all known games are on the Marquette Wiki, which has the known schedule and roster for 2008-09.

Cracked Sidewalks Central got an email today about Marquette Great, Earl Tatum.

His daughter reports:

Jeronne Maymon to Marquette

Jeronne Maymon, a highly ranked 6'6" 235 pound forward from Madison Memorial High School, committed to Marquette this morning per IWB from the Scout.com board. Dave Telep also has the story up.

With Maymon (ranked #58 in the junior class by Scout.com) Buzz has now secured two top 100 commitments for his first two spots in the 2009 recruiting class. Last year, 6'7" Erik Williams from Cy Springs High School in suburban Houston committed to Marquette.

The combination of Maymon and Williams is intriguing and provides a glimpse into the roster re-build underway at MU. For more than a decade, the Warriors have been vulnerable to opponents that were more athletic on the blocks and on the wings. It seems that Buzz Williams had enough of those mismatches. With Maymon, likely a 3/4 combo forward in college, and Erik Williams, more of a small forward/wing player, Buzz Williams is fast building a roster of versatile, athletic players at positions where MU failed to land high-ceiling talent in the past.

Maymon sets date for announcement

The first major recruiting milestone of the Buzz Williams era arrives on Tuesday, May 27 when fast-rising junior Jeronne Maymon from Madison is expected to announce his college choice. The 6'5" Maymon has offers from Baylor, Iowa State, Marquette, Tennessee, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Green Bay, USC, Temple and Providence.

Maymon's announcement sparked an IM discussion yesterday between Henry Sugar and NYWarrior -and it went like this:

Full Details on 1st Annual Warrior Day Golf Outing

As we first reported several weeks ago, this summer Marquette great Bo Ellis will host the first annual golf outing to honor his late daughter, Nikki, a 2000 Marquette graduate.

The 1st Annual Warrior Day Golf Outing will be held on Monday, July 28th at The Bog in Saukville, Wisconsin. The golf outing in Nikki's memory will benefit the Nicole Ellis Foundation, a 501(C)3 corporation. All proceeds will benefit the American Liver Foundation, Marquette Men's and Women's non-revenue sports, and the proposed Hank Raymonds Educational Center.

Supporters are asked to provide a $350 donation which includes 18 holes of golf with a former Marquette Warrior basketball player and a host of other perks. If you can't make the golf outing, that's fine too -- $100 donations will be accepted for the dinner, which includes a silent auction and raffles.

Our beloved Marquette was 14th in attendance for the 2006-2007 season according to the official NCAA report. The NCAA has not yet released official figures for the 2007-2008 season.

According to the Marquette Athletic Department's unofficial numbers for the past season, MU will again rank #14 in the country at 16,239 (which is a record attendance figure at MU). This number is still #3 in the BIG EAST behind Syracuse (#3 nationally behind Kentucky and North Carolina) and Louisville (#5 nationally).

Recruiting

• According to Mark Miller at wissports.net, Providence College and new coach Keno Davis have offered a scholarship to Jeronne Maymon. Maymon was planning on taking an unofficial visit to Marquette yesterday.
  
• Updated - According to Mark Miller, the visit went well. Maymon's father commented

• “It was great meeting with Buzz Williams and the other coaches,” Tim Maymon said. “Things went well.”

• Updated - From the same report by Mark Miller, Marquette has now extended a scholarship offer to 2010 Randolph player Kyle Kelm. Kelm is a fast rising, 6'9" player that reminds some of Steve Novak with his ability to shoot from distance. Kyle plays for the Wisconsin Swing 16U squad that won the Wisconsin State AAU championships recently. According to Mark, this is Buzz' first scholarship offer to a 2010 player. Make sure you check out Mark's link for more information, including quotes.
  
• AJ Walton is a name that is now popping up on Marquette's recruiting list. The 6'1" point guard from Little Rock is a top 100 player in 2009. He also has Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Baylor on his list. AJ's favorite player in the NBA is Dwyane Wade. The Arkansas Democrat Gazette, which recently named him their Mr. Basketball, has a nice article about Walton.
  
• A new name on the list for Marquette is Latavious Williams. Coach Buzz Williams is strongly after the "All-Williams" team, but since Latavious Williams is a five-star, #13 overall ranked power forward in the class of 2009, we guess that helps too. A K-State blog says that Latavious lists Marquette in his top five. Chances are probably slim for Marquette, but it's always nice to see us listed as contenders with five-star recruits.

Daily Update

Just catching folks up on the various bits of Marquette information spreading across the airwaves:

• Continuing on the original Rivals article by Bob McClellan that we commented on last week, Rivals has a new article asking "Was Williams the right choice for Marquette?. The article starts off by saying that

It's fair to categorize Marquette's hiring of Buzz Williams to replace Tom Crean as a major surprise

• McClellan calls the hire a "Good Hire" (not great), but the co-author Andrew Skwara calls it "Questionable". Read the link for additional information. Just like the original article sparked a six page thread on MUScoop, the new article is likewise generating further debate.
• Rosiak's excellent blog covered Crean's MU Salary yesterday. Crean earned $1.85 million in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2007 and was by far the highest paid faculty member at the school. The article has additional details, including comparisons with other coaches.
• In some good news, the Chicago Tribune has a front page story about McNeal, titled "Marquette's McNeal intent on taking his shot at NBA". Just like Dominic James last year, the situation is really a win-win for McNeal. He gets to test out the process and receive NBA feedback, and his worst case scenario is returning for his senior year.
• Buzz Williams was the featured guest on the Dennis Krause show yesterday afternoon. According to GoMarquette.com's release, the show will be broadcast over two dozen times in the next week. You could also watch it on the internet (requires IE)
• Finally, Time Warner Sports is re-broadcasting classic Marquette games throughout the summer. The station will broadcast a different Marquette game every Friday night, with an encore presentation on Sunday evening. The schedule features only Marquette victories (which is nice), and includes competition such as Pitt, Cincy, Louisville, Duke, South Carolina, and "It's Indiana, It's Indiana". This week's game is Louisville at Marquette (2/20/97). Check the link for more details.

Recruiting Updates

Just a few quick updates regarding recruits.

• Mark Miller reports that "New Marquette University coach Buzz Williams is beginning to show interest in Milwaukee Lutheran sophomore T.J. Kadima." If you don't check it out regularly, bookmark the following site and check it out regularly. Mark Miller does a great job.
• Harv and Roy from Bullseye report that 6'2 guard Darius Smith from Marshall High School in Chicago and 6'3 guard David Brown from Hononegah High School in Rockton, IL are both high priority recruits for Marquette University. Check out the link for more details.
• Per a report from TampaBay.com, MU is expressing strong interest in 6'2" point guard Sheldon Cooley. Cooley was the Hillsborough Player of the Year, averaging 22 points, 9 rebounds and five steals per game as a junior.
  
• NBE Basketball Report has a great rundown of the GBOA North AAU Tournament. There are just a ton of comments about Marquette target Jeronne Maymon in the link, including a detailed breakdown (scroll down). Here's my favorite comment:

"...to a waiting Maymon who passed up an opportunity for a highlight reel finish by laying the ball softly off the glass and in with nary a defender in sight."

Above Expectations

The most recent Cracked Sidewalks post about the Buzz hiring seems to have re-opened a nerve in the comments section here at Cracked Sidewalks and on MUScoop. Personally, I was also fairly critical about the decision to hire Buzz, but I said my piece and then waited to see what happened. My position was not one where I wanted him to be the wrong choice, so that every setback (like the Tyshawn Taylor situtation) was judged harshly. However, it was also not one where Buzz received automatic acceptance that he was the right person for the job. My position?

Prove it.

I've seen some suggestions that Buzz deserves 2-3 years to grow into the job. I totally disagree. In my opinion, Buzz gets exactly one year to prove that he's the right choice for a program coming off of three straight NCAA appearances / Top 25 finishes. One. Year. Buzz managed to convince Cracked Sidewalks punching bag Steve Cottingham he was the right choice, but I want to see him prove he's a Big East coach this year.

Buzz gets graded this year based on six areas:

• Roster Continuity (5%)
  
• Coaching Staff Selection (5%)
• Representative of Marquette (10%)
  
• 2009 (or 2010) Recruiting (25%)
  
• Regular Season Success (25%)
  
• NCAA Success (30%)
  

I think that the percentages are fair, but certainly the opinions of CS readers are welcome. Thus far, only two of those areas are even complete, and a third (Representative of Marquette) has only limited information. However, I have to say that Buzz has been Above Expectations in all three areas.

Roster Continuity - (4 out of 5)
When we look at what the worst case scenario could have been (losing all four recruits for this year, Erik Williams, Scott Christopherson, Trevor Mbakwe, and Dominic James), I've got to say that Buzz did a pretty good job here. Once Crean left, Nick Williams was never going to set foot on Marquette's campus. Plus, Jimmy Butler was an upgrade over Scott Christopherson. The only area that could have been better would have been if Tyshawn Taylor stuck with MU. There was some definite ugliness, but in reading the outstanding Blog from Rosiak, I believe that Buzz handled the situation pretty well and kept the high road.

Coaching Staff Selection - (4 out of 5)
Unlike his employer, Buzz took his time filling out his coaching staff (gratuitous dig!). With a realistic view of things, I think he did pretty well. Tony Benford is experienced, well regarded, and has worked with big men in the past. "Aki" Collins is unproven, but appears to be the hungry young coach with East Coast connections. It's a bit odd that Dale Layer is now working for his former employee, but that's their relationship. Layer also brings experience to the bench and the recruiting trail. Add to that the positions for Autry and (almost certainly) Monarch, and the staff has real promise. I think the only thing really keeping this from being a five is if Buzz had hired someone like Josh Pastner.

Representative of Marquette - (4 out of 5)
I keep thinking about a quote from Billy Gillespie about Buzz (which you can find on his Marquette home page).

Everyone likes him. If they don't start out liking him, he forces them to like him.

I've heard several interviews with Buzz, and I've got to say that I like the guy. If you haven't listened, check them out yourself on his home page. There's a refreshing honesty and candor about him. Certainly, there's considerably less coach-speak than the previous coach, and I don't think I've heard him say phenomenal once. Heck it even seems like Murff is warming up to Buzz.

In summary, the proof will be when we start getting to 2009 recruits and when the season kicks off. Until then, Buzz has been Above Expectations. Keep on proving it, Buzz!

Cottingham details 'the process'

OK, let's start with the good stuff.......Bob McClellan from Rivals.com pulled together an article on Buzz Williams -- the piece effectively recaps the 'how we got here' and 'here's what we know about Buzz' storylines.

Of course, we also have to put up with Marquette AD Steve Cottingham's defense of his unwillingness to conduct a thorough, national search to fill the institution's most visible job. So, in honor of FireJoeMorgan.com, we're going Ken Tremendous on Cottingham.

"I think the general public might see it that way (as a risky hire)," Marquette athletic director Steve Cottingham told Rivals.com.

Despite being an inside job, the Politburo would have seen it as a risky hire. Hiring a coach embroiled in a legal battle with his previous employer -- a job he left under questionable circumstances after a losing season -- is risky. For a university that believes its men's basketball program is a key part of its strategy to attract interest from prospective students and dollars from alums, the hire was risky by any measure.

"My view is it's a much greater risk to hire somebody based on the popular opinion."

Please ring that gong, Chuck Barris.

Would everybody who thought that MU should hire a coach based on popular opinion raise your hand? (no hands go up in our virtual world).

No, Mr. Cottingham. Marquette fans wanted to see the institution engage in a competitive evaluation and hiring process that didn't include "hire the last assistant remaining in the program" as a key criterion.

"There wasn't a risk in hiring Buzz because we know what he can do and know what he's going to do."

Seriously, Cottingham said that. You can't make this stuff up. To recap, here is what we knew about Buzz Williams at the time of his hiring:

• Buzz Williams did not have to defend his resume or approach to building a program against a slate of competitive candidates.
• Buzz Williams quit on the folks at the University of New Orleans and was engaged in a protracted legal battle with them.
• Buzz Williams led UNO to a 14-17 record as head coach.
• Buzz Williams played a brief, minor role in building the MU program.
  
• Buzz Williams would have been an assistant coach at any other D1 program in the nation for the 2008-2009 season.
• Buzz Williams seems to have been an effective recruiter as an assistant coach.
  
• Buzz Williams might be just fine in the end. Or he might not.

"It would have been easy to settle for a name on somebody else's list."

I think Cottingham mis-spoke here. What he meant to say was, "It would not have been easy to conduct an aggressive, national search. Such a search would have taken time and forced candidates to demonstrate their competing visions of Marquette basketball. Those candidates could have challenged this institution's perspectives in what would have been a very healthy dialectic. Ultimately we just didn't need that kind of distraction."

Cottingham admits other coaches were approached. He declined to reveal any names.

Approached? Stalked? Left messages for? Sigh.

It took Buzz Williams more time to hire his first assistant coach than it did for MU to hire its 16th head basketball coach. And per Internet reports, Williams actually conducted an aggressive national search to build out his staff (I didn't think MU allowed such a thing!). Bravo, Buzz.

"We did our job in terms of looking at people we thought would be interested and would be the right fit"

Looking at people but not interviewing people, apparently.

"That's all part of doing your due diligence."

Due diligence? This process was reminiscent of the fella who marries the first girl he kisses, only to realize later that playing the field for a while might have resulted in out-kicking his coverage.

"Buzz emerged pretty quickly as a strong candidate."

A haunting refrain reappears near Cottingham's noggin as a Pop-Up Video bubble , "Hire the last assistant remaining in the program."

"Recruiting is a huge part," Cottingham said.

Of course!! Nobody else that MU might have considered as a head coach can recruit -- only Buzz Williams can recruit. It's all making sense now.

"Even during the season, it became clear to me he'd be a high-major coach," Cottingham said. "I just didn't expect it would be at Marquette."

On this point we agree. Nobody else did either.

Marquette Student Storms into Jeopardy Finals

Well, you know it's the off-season at Cracked Sidewalks when we're talking game-shows.

But Marquette's own Danielle Zsenak (aka Chainsaw_McGee) is kicking ass and taking names on Jeopardy's College Championship. She's been on three nights, and trounced her opposition each night, including last night's day-1 Championship round, summarized by MOWarrior:

The guy from Harvey Mudd controlled the buzzer for the Jeopardy round, and had a sizeable lead going into Double Jeopardy. Double Jeopardy round saw McGee surge, and the guy from Mississippi State establish himself. Going into Final Jeopardy Chainsaw McGee had 15,000 points, Harvey Mudd in the lead with 17k or thereabouts, and MSU guy in 3rd. Final Jeopardy category was something like "Famous Journals," with the question: "This arctic explorer reported evidence of earlier Norwegian explorers at the pole." MSU guy gets it right: Robert Scott. His wager puts him at about 17k or so, I forget exactly. Our girl gets it right too. Her wager: All in. 30k. Harvey Mudd guy misses.

Chainsaw McGee didn't miss a single question the whole game. Very disciplined game, perfectly played. She's leading after round one of the Finals. What a wonderful representative of our school.

Filling the void at the point: An update on Johnny Lacy

Johnny Lacy, a 5'10" whirling dervish of a point guard from Milwaukee, turned in an impressive performance at the King James Classic recently. According to HoopsReport.com, Lacy was one of the top performers in the camp where he ran the point for the Playground Elite squad (the same squad that MU target Jamil Wilson runs with). Per HoopsReport.com

We saw Lacy play in an event in Milwaukee last month and we came away highly impressed with both his quickness and shooting ability and after seeing him a second time this weekend in Akron, we are completely sold on this guy.

Lacy currently lists MU, Tennessee, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Cincy.

Catching up with Robb Logterman

Ever wonder what became of sweet-shooting Robb Logterman? Dave Wedeward from Janesville's GazetteXtra.com wrote this fine profile of Robb, tracking all the way back to his days at Janesville Craig up to the present day.

Turns out that Robb will be inducted into the Janesville Sports Hall of Fame next Saturday. Congrats, Robb.

Jeff Goodman of FoxSports catches up with Dominic James -- who has nothing but good things to say about Buzz Williams, Trevor Mbakwe and Chris Otule (along with a shot at Tommy Irsay).

Goodman also reports that 2008 combo guard Varez Ward will visit Texas this weekend -- no word on any interest regarding MU.

Mike DeCourcy writes up an incongruous review of the Buzz Williams hire....strangely TSN says MU made a decision 'in a panic', but ultimately rates the hire as a solid 'B'.

Um, hi....we're back

Life (er, work) has a funny way of interrupting your hobbies, hence the dearth of material here for the last several days. Capitalism has a funny way of demanding increasing amounts of your time. Anyway, we're back. For those of you who follow the threads on MUScoop and other sites, some of this might be redux -- but let's get caught up with Marquette hoops.

Marquette has offered 2009 stud Jeronne Maymon of Madison Memorial High School. Mark Miller of WSN Boys Basketball has the details here. Maymon, a 6'6" combo forward, currently sports offers from MU, USC and Iowa State with many more to follow. Maymon is off to a fast start this spring on the AAU circuit, turning in a series of eye-catching performances.

Darrius Morrow signed with ECU. Recruiting successfully requires patience and vision more than a hunger to settle for the 'best (only?) player available'. I'm glad to see that Buzz Williams appears to have exhibited that with Morrow.

6'10" Kyle Rowley reclassified to 2008 and signed with Northwestern. Good luck, Kyle.

According to the Big East Basketball Report, MU is after 2009 PG Justin Jordan of Fort Wayne.

Marquette University's athletic programs delivered academically once again. According to MU, each of th university's 14 athletic teams exceeded the NCAA's required Academic Progress Rate (APR). Steve Yanda of the Marquette Tribune ran a provocative article about the university's proclivity to favor the internal hire over a competitive, national search. Here's my key take-away from the article:

In February, Cottingham was named Marquette's athletic director after a 14-month interim stint during which he conducted the search for a permanent replacement. Though Cottingham stated throughout the search process that he was not interested in the full-time position, he eventually concluded he was the best person for the job.

Dale Layer named assistant coach at MU

Buzz Williams went with experience and familiarity to fill the final assistant coaching spot on his bench when he welcomed former Colorado State head coach Dale Layer to Marquette.

Layer, head coach of the Rams from 2000 - 2007, led CSU to one conference title and compiled a 103-106 record overall. Buzz Williams served on Layer's staff in Fort Collins for four years. Layer spent this past season as an assistant at Liberty University and has been in the coaching business for 30 years.

So, Buzz Williams will go to battle with Tony Benford, Dale Layer and Aki Collins. These coaches are an interesting mix given that their strong national footprint as coaches does not include the significant Midwestern flavor that characterize most Marquette coaching staffs.

With this hire, Williams has a decidedly veteran assistant coaching staff considering Layer and Benford combine for more than 45 years on the sidelines. Throw Collins' New York City heritage and recent work at a Jesuit university, and the make-up of the staff appears strong - with only the one glaring weakness:

• Can this group of coaches successfully recruit the Midwest?

Perhaps they don't need to -- well, let's not go that far.

Recently, MU's roster has been built with recruits from outside of MU's home region. Still, recruiting well close to home -- ie, MU's own back yard and Chicagoland -- will be one aspect of the next six months (until National Signing Day) fans will track closely.

Buzz Williams update, new potential recruit emerges

According to this report from a K-State blog penned by a reporter from the Wichita Eagle, it appears that MU is in pursuit of 6'2" combo guard Varez Ward from the Patterson School in Lenior, NC. Marquette is in good company with Ward -- Texas, Arkansas, K-State and FSU have also offered according to his coach.

Also today, Rosiak files this report on the outlook for Buzz Williams first year on the sidelines at MU -- somewhat of a very early season preview. In addition, Buzz Williams sat down with Todd Rosiak for a thorough overview of the program in this blog entry. Among the most interesting nuggets:

• Regarding the last open scholarship -- Williams indicated it could be used for either the 08 or 09 classes;
• Williams expects Butler and Fulce to be 'ahead of the curve' as compared to true freshmen next season;
• David Cubillan will have surgery on his left shoulder soon. He recently had surgery on his right shoulder and has not had an individual workout yet this off-season.
  
• Williams took the high-road on the Tyshawn Taylor situation. Smart.
• There are no updates on McNeal's NBA process in the report
  
• Varez Ward is not mentioned in the Rosiak update.
